AC Duct cleaning

I have a new construction home of 2800 sq ft - bult in 2000. I have never had the ducts cleaned. How oftern shhould this be done? Any idea as to what it would cost and what I should look out for as far as hiring a contractor?

Also I have vents - some in the floor and some in the walls. The ones in the walls - some are up top which I cannot adjust and some are on the bottom of the wall - which I can open close. I'm sure I'm supposed to regulate depending upon heat/cool - just not sure when. Please advise and THANKS!

Maybe never.

The EPA does not recommend duct cleaning as a ROUTINE maintenance procedure. See http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/airduct.html

There are situations that can call for a duct cleaning. This EPA publication provides a good background for a decision.
