Central air crapped out on me...any suggestions?

Around five days ago, the fan in my furnace (for the AC) began making unusual noises whenever the AC ran. The noises were sort of a rattling sound. After a day or two, the unit quit working altogether; no cooling, no fan, no nothing. The thermostat indicator shows that cooling is taking place when the AC is turned on, but the fan does not come on and there is no cool air blowing out (obviously).

When I turn the thermostat fan switch to on, the fan still does not engage.

I'm not sure if the fan noises are related to the shutdown.

I've checked the circuit breakers; they have not been tripped.

A service tech is coming tomorrow (Tuesday) a.m. Is there anything else I should look at before I spend $$ on a service call? Is there a fuse or breaker somewhere within the furnace or within the AC unit itself?

Help! Thanks!

Most likely there is something wrong with the fan and motor assembly itself. Could be bad motor bearings, the blower wheel is shot or maybe loose on the motor shaft. Maybe one of the motor supports has broken. The technician will be able to tell when he investigates. Don't run the a/c with the indoor fan inoperative. The indoor coil will freeze over and this could damage the compressor.
