more than 2 filters?

I have 2 central ac systems (gas furnace w/ ac's about 2 tons each)in my home (have recently moved in) and have discovered that each unit has 2 filters located at the return air areas, one high at the ceiling and one at the floor approx. 20 x 20 each. the previous homeowner has left spare filters, however some do not appear to be compatable and I assume that they are from the older unit which was replaced. is it possible that there are other filter locations that I am not aware of - where could they be if so?

More filters?

The air should never pass through a succession of filters. The filters at the air intake for each unit should be the only filters in the airstream.

Look in the furnace fan section to make sure that no filter is installed inside. Also no filter should ever be installed in an air supply outlet.
