Unhappy Oil furnace won't run.

It is getting colder and I turned up my thermostat to run the furnace. The only thing that happened was a sort of buzzing from the furnace. Any idea what the problem might be

The buzzing noise is probably the sparking at the electrodes. Oil furnaces are not a DIY project. Please call a trained technician.

Let me ask the obvious question first.

Does your oil tank have any oil in it ?

You mentioned a buzzing sound. How about the pump/blower motor ? Is it running when you here the buzzing sound ?

If it isn't, there is your problem.

If it is running, things that should be checked out are:

1) The oil filter might need to be replaced.
2) Pump might need to be bled.
3) It is possible there is water in you oil tank ?
4) Nozzle could be clogged and might need replacement.

All of these things would be part of a routine tune-up. When was the last time your furnace had maintenance.
