Question bad idea to move furnace to attic?

Our furnace is located in the hallway (one story house) off of the master bedroom. It is taking up half of the master closet space to I'm thinking of relocating it to the attic. My furnace is 24 yrs. old and pretty tall so I know I have to get a new one for the attic.

My neighbor said that it's not a good idea to put a furnace in the attic. Can cause problems, he says. Is this true? What are the problems that go along with it?

If we decide to keep it where it is, should I replace my 24 yr. old furnace with a newer one? It's such a workhorse and seem to working just fine. Any input is greatly appreciated!

no problem

putting onr in the attic. the evap coil for the a/c will get an emergency drain pan probably with a float switch to keep water from coming through the sheetrock. they are installed this way a lot more than you might think. a newer furnace will have a higher efficiency rating, and gas consumption should go down. several duct modifications will have to take place, but this is done a lot.
