AC Fan will not shut off

I know a similar question has been posted before, but I did not find a solution to my problem. The fan is located in the attic and will not shut off. I turn the thermostat way up (for AC) and nothing happens. The only way I can get it to stop is by flipping the power switch to the fan in the attic or by flipping the circuit breaker that powers the fan. Turning the thermostat to off has no affect either. Also, the outside AC unit does not kick on with lowing the thermostat. I disconnected all wires to the thermostat and the fan keeps on truckin'. Is this a thermostat problem or a system problem? Anything I can try on my own (amateur handywoman here) before calling the pros? Thanks!

The problem is most likely that the fan relay contacts are stuck together. Tapping on the relay may free them up. Otherwise replacement of the relay would fix the problem. (One of the fan motor wires leads to the relay which usually a little black plastic box with 4 to 6 terminals for attaching wires.)
