Fireplace--stove Insert

There is a stove insert in the fireplace. Fairly new--at least hasn't been used. I build a small fire (damper open) (chimney clean) turned on the fan and the room filled with smoke.
The smoke came from under the stove and around all sides including the top . Fireplace is rock to the ceiling. I would really like to use the fireplace. Can't contact landlord on this, either. Please help!

Thanks for your input.

not a fireplace expet here

but it seems that all smoke should be exiting the home through the flue if proper draft is present. try lighting some newspaper and holding it in the fireplace to induce a draft before lighting a fire. also be sure flue is clear. also be sure no air leaks are present that would cause the fan to pull the smoke from the fire and blow it into the room. if there are some, you may have the fan creating a draft/negative pressure on the flue, and pumping the smoke into the room.
