New 13 seer Tappan Heat Pump

Im building a 2100 sq. ft. home with a 1600 sq. ft. basement. I just had a Tappan heat pump and A/C system installed. The total price for duct work and everything was $ 5800. When the Heating and Cooling contractor bid the job I upgraded from a 10 seer to a 14 seer. He wanted $ 1000 more to go from a 10 to a 12 seer and $ 500 more in addition to the $ 1000.00 to go to a 14 seer. The problem is the unit installed is a 13 seer not a 14 seer Tappan does not produce a 14 seer unit. Should I make a big deal about the 1 seer difference as it was put in writting or just forget about it? It seems to me he owes me $ 250.00 or a 14 seer unit.

Talking HEAT PUMP

I think you paid too much for this heat pump. But a lot is where your at and what things go for there. In MO. here not seeing the job is hard but i'd say here it should have been around $4k.If you have it in black and white id go get some money back. Why i say that is i just hate when i lose a job to some one and then find out that they said they would put in so an so and i bid against that and find out they put a smaller unit in and got away with it. Can't say for sure but you might just have to bite the bullet here. Are you sure there wasn't some misunderstanding when you upgraded to 14 SEER? Seems to me the contractor would have advised you that it was going to be a 13, unless you negociated with the builder and not the contractor. I'd have to say $5800 for the unit and ductwork is in the ballpark but a little steep for the upgrade. Prices vary throughout the country of course. Sionce your post raises a flag,I would want to make sure everything including the ductwork was in fact inspected before being written off and that a heat load for proper sizing was done. If everything is as you say, I'd get with the contractor and tell him you want $250 in cash, yesterday. Put it and the complaint in writing and if necessary, go to the state licencing board. I'm not a lawyer but I too hate to hear of shady contractors taking advantage of an unsuspecting homeowner. Good luck.

excellent advice

something fishy here. he may be upsizing the evap to boost the SEER. regardless, make him show you the ERI book listing your equipment's rating. 14 SEER is 14 SEER, just as $5800 is $5800...time to look a little closer at your system. another company will come out and give their opinion for a small fee. although they will be slightly biased and picky, YOU have to live with this equipment. small fee for both peace of mind and future comfort. catch problems now before it is too late.

I called the owner of the company that installed the system today and he said that the unit had a 14 seer rating because he installed a larger 2 speed air handler? If it is a 14 seer unit then why does the Energy tag say 13? I hope that some of you HVAC people can fill me in. also I am the builder and have a contract that says a 14 seer unit was to be installed. I know that the cost of these units are very little so do you guys think I should forget the 1 seer as were talking about just a couple of dollars?

But you should look into a Heat recovery system on this AC.It will give you free hot water and also kick up your seer 1 or 2 pointsED
