Gas furnace - no heat

Old gas furnace (20 yrs) tries to ignite when turned on but then quits. Would a bad thermocouple cause this problem? Pilot okay.

thermocouple

The purpose of the thermocouple is to prove flame to the pilot and keep the pilot valve open.
Check that you have 24 volts to the main gas valve and common terminal on the gas valve. If 24Volts are interupted, your problem is most likely in the thermostat. I take it, this is a standing pilot gas valve......

Please describe what exactly you mean by "tries" to start.
Provide more information on your furnace. Make, model, location, etc.
