Question tempstar heat pump split system

WHEN UNIT GOES INTO DE-ICE OF COILS IS IT TRIGGERED BY TEMPERATURE AND OR TIMER OR BOTH? OUTSIDE TEMP HAD RISEN TO ABOVE FREEZING AND UNIT DIDNT DE-ICE COILS RAN CONTINUOUSLY FOR SEVERAL HOURS FINALLY SHUT OFF WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF ICE ON COILS. DO I HAVE A PROBLEM?

many units

have what is called a thermister, a sensor on the outdoor coil to send the unit into defrost if time does not get it first. my opinion is that if the units heats correctly throughout this cycle, there is no problem. many units do not go into defrost unless it is needed.
