Question Hot Water Heater

I have a problem with my hot water heater. It uses natural gas, and is your standard 40 gal tank (the kind that is about $160 at home depot), and not a super efficient model.

I am having problems with it first thing in the morning getting enough hot water out of it for showers. I don't notice a problem with it at any other time during the day. I live in Missouri, and we have hard water.

The pilot is always lit, so no problem with that.

Has anyone heard of this happening? The unit is only 5 yrs old--is that as long as they last before they start going out?

Thanks,

HOT WATER

Been there done that. Dont know where in MO you are but hard water oh ya. At Osage Beach Mo, a gas hot water tank will build up in side around the flue pipe and that will cut way down on the recovery of the tank.Like in the electric hot water tank 4 to 6 months and the bottom element is shot and hard to pull out cause of the stuff in the hard water that builds up in the tank. You will see what I mean when you go to lift the old tank as to lifting the new tank ED

Smile I agree.

Aseret_in_MO:

There is the possibility that scale has built up to and past the temp sensor.

You may be able to clean the tank but it would be a lot of work.

Try draining it and see what comes out.

***Caution***
There is a chance that if you open the bottom drain valve that it may not close again. Be prepared.

It would be nice to be able to clean it but it may not be worth the effort.
