Question Heat Pump Startup

I live in NW TN and the temperature ranges from about 30 in the morning to 50 during the day. My heat pump, not sure of the make but 9 years old, works fine and heats the house. The problem is that at night, I usually hear it when I'm going to bed, is that the heat pump will shut off normally and I'll hear it clicking like it wants to come back on, it will do this for awhile and then stop. Then the heat will come back on normally in a little while. Any help would be great.

It is possible that the compressor is unable to immediately start on a call for heat and is cycling on the thermal protector.
If so a professional will have to be consulted to determine a remedy.

In order to confirm this the cover will have to be removed to pinpoint the exact source of the clicking.

OK, thanks. That will be my next step. The only thing that I wonder is that if you turn the thermostat up it comes on right away.

No, I have a regular thermostat. I checked to make sure everything was ok inside of it. Any other thing you can think of?

Anything else will require electrical testing.

Better call the pros before you lose it all together.
