Heat pump Idea?

I presently have a split system. I'm preparing to
replace the AC unit this spring. I have an idea to
consider.
Is it possible or feasable to replace the AC with a
heat pump to run in conjuction with the existing
gas furnace? Good idea?
I'm still doing my homework on this project.
Thanks
William

YES

this is generally considered a dual fuel system, a great idea.

How does this work? I am somewhat familiar with
aux heat strips. Will my furnace take their place?
Is more than one thermstat needed?

very similiar

to heat pump with gas acting as aux heat. one differnce will be that a duct sensor is needed to prevent gas heat and heat pump from running at the same time. you do not want hot air discharge from the furnace across the indoor coil while the heat pump is running in heat. a dual fuel board will solve this. many other options are available, dual fuel tstat, etc.

This is an option that I will consider when
I talk with the contractors.
Thanks again for your ideas.
