Exclamation AC/Heat Unit: AC portion not working

My current home has a Payne SPLIT-SYSTEM HEAT PUMP, model number 541CJ030. This unit is about 15-years old.

Two years ago, the AC of this unit went out. I had a repairman to look at it and he said that the compressor was clicking on but it would not stay on for long. He said that I needed a new compressor. (Price, including parts and labor around $1,100)

Can I change the compressor myself? Or is it to complicated and dangerous? And if it's a do-it-yourself project, where can I find the information on how to do it?

Compressor replacement...

If its a split system, it's easier and faster to just replace the condensing unit....but call in a pro...WAYYYYYY beyond the scope of doityourself.
