Question What two-stage thermostat to use?

Need to replace an old manual Lennox two-stage thermostat that is only used for AC. What do you use for your two-stage cooling system (not heat pump)? Is the $150 Honeywell T8624D Chronotherm IV Deluxe worth the price? You can get a digital single-stage thermostat for $15 at HD. Why two-stage thermostat is much more expensive? Thanks in advance.

Check it out again. Typically when a thermostat says it is 2 stage they are referring to heat. Heat pumps are 2 stage (and popular) but in heating mose only. But as the boys are implying, 2 stages of cooling are rare in residential installations.

It is a two-speed compressor

there is an extra wire for turn on the high speed when it's hot enough. It is a Lennox residential system.

I'll be darned

Sounds like you will need to match that 2 stage cool. That could elevate the price of a replacement. Sorry to doubt your knowledge of your requirements.

Even though you have a residential unit you are in the realm of a commercial thermostat and unfortunately have to pay the price.
