replacing thru-wall airconditioner

HI, i have a dead Fedders 12000 BTU thru-the-wall airconditioner in my home. i assume i can replace the guts with a new one of the same make and model, while leaving the shell in place. however, if i want to replace brands, does anybody know whether there are just a handful of standard sizes, or is everything customized, etc.. i want to avoid pitfalls ranging from buying something that wont fit through overpaying by having to search for the identical item.

There is a very good chance that the Fedders replacement is not the same size.
If it doesn't fit I would recommend you not spend your energy trying to find an exact fit, but rather buy what you think is the best quality/bargain and adjust the opening . There may be a chance that the replacement is smaller and you will only have to shim the opening and replace the trim.

One to thing to watch out for is that not all wall units have the same condenser air intake configuration. You will have to make sure that whatever you buy will fit into your wall without blocking any grills on the side of the unit.
