Question Thermostat

If the thermostat fails and the a/c does not cut off, is it possible that carbon monoxide or other fumes would come out of the vents? We woke up in the middle of the night last night and the house smelled like there was an old Buick idling in the living room. The old, round honeywell t-stat doesn't seem to be responding and it is difficult to rotate the dial.

I can see no relationship between the odor and the thermostat. You can replace the thermostat easily if you suspect it to be a problem. That model needs to be level to be accurate. If you remove the outer ring and loosen the three screws that hold it to the sub-base, you will see a flat surface on the top of the sub-base. Put a small level on that surface and make sure it is dead level. Put the thermostat back on and try it again. If that doesn't make it accurate for cooling, replace it.

The smell could be condensation in the ducts or mold on the evaporator coil. But if there isn't a Buick in the living room, there is no carbon monoxide from the a/c unit. Even refrigerant has no odor so a leak isn't a reason for the odor either. Let us know what you find or if you need more assistance.
