Question Relocate Cold Air Return?

I have a cold air return (see picture @
www.geocities.com/residentialrepair/coldair )

I want to put a walk way in the interior wall. As you can see this
cold air return goes straight up through the floor from the furnace
into the wall.

Any suggestions on relocation?

How about switching the furnace with the hot water heater and coming
up through the next set of studs? Or eliminating it. I have two other returns (one in my bedroom and one downstairs)?

If you remove the return air duct you will likely solve one problem but create another.

Ductwork is fairly versatile and you likely could re-route it.
Get an estimate from a reliable sheet metal company.
This shouldn't be too expensive to have done.
