Capacitor and Motor Starter

How do you check out a capacitor and motor starter on an A/C Condensor Fan Motor to determine if they are good?

You can use a voltmeter to check for 24 volts at the coil if its not energizing and for 240 volts at output terminals if the contacts have pulled in. Also if the contacts have pulled in you can probe both terminals on the same line to check for an open or dirty contact.

Check a capacitor with an analogue ohmmeter. After turning off the power, short the two terminals to discharge residual power then probe both terminals with the meter set to about 1k ohms.
If ok the meter will rise slightly while charging and then dip back to zero. If the meter rises and stays the cap is shorted and if it doesn't move it could be open. Short the terminals to discharge when repeating the test.
