AC Unit failing

Hello,

My Central Air in my mother's house is only a year old. She aksed me to take a look at it, but I don't know alot about these things.

1. On the thermostat, should it be left on HEAT, OFF or COOL. The install guy said to not touch any of the options except the temp, all year round. Not sure where it was left at.

2. I only have a faint amount of air coming from the vents. The day before, it was blasting cold air! I changed the filter, but no change. The actual ducts on top of the furnace has ice on it. Not sure what to do and we can't get anyone out until Tuesday!

Thanks

if

filer is clean, check the blower and coil, if they too are clean, sounds like low refrigerant
