Unhappy Fan inside shuts off but outside unit keeps running...

I have noticed in this past week that when the thermostat reaches the set temp that the inside fan shuts off but the unit outside keeps running. It seems to only do this when the unit has been running for a while, not all the time. If I set the thermostat from Auto to Off and then back to Auto the outside unit shuts off (2:30 AM here and noticed hearing the outside unit running). Any ideas? Bad thing is I'm leaving out of state tomorrow and it concerns me that it will keep running, which can't be good for the AC unit. Thanks for the help.

More than likely the contactor is sticking in the outdoor unit. Easy fix. If you have a volt meter just check voltage at the coil of the contactor when it should be off. If you don't get 24v it's the contactor if you do then you either have a bad stat or a short in stat wire.

Did you look at the contactor ? Could also be you cooked some bugs there on the points and that holds it in sometimes. ED

Contactor looked charred around the contact points. I spoke with a friend who is an A/C tech. He was saying that because the thermostat when turned to OFF shuts the outside unit off that the problem is more than likely the thermostat circuit board.

Is it the heat or what ? They love contactors.
