Installing register boots

I'm adding a new service to a framed room in my basement. When installing the boot should I simply nail/screw it to a nearby stud or would it be better to frame it in with 2x4?

New boot

You dont say where wall or in the ceiling. But this should work for both. Cut down in all the corners of the boot about 3/4 " Now take and bend the sides out 90o like the 2"- 4"or the 6" sides. Then nail the boot to the stud with that bent out part on the front of the stud. then drywall or what ever. cut the hole for the reg in it before you put it up. This way one of the reg. screws will go into the stud and the other one drill for it and that reg screw will go into that other bent out ear behind the wall to hold it to the wall. ED
