My heat pump compressor will not kick on and stay on to provide heat. When it tries to kick on, all I get is about 5 clicks. I had someone install a hardstart kit to help the compressor kick on, but no luck. Any suggestions out there?

Hello Paul:

From what you describe, I would be inclined to think the hardstart kit is trying to cure a symptom. The problem lies elsewhere.

The solenoid directly on the compressor may be faulty. So could the relay and or the pressure valve.

A compressor will not startup against the pressure on the high side. Another possible problem may be liquid inside the compressor cylinders.

You didn't mention the units age here nor any other recent repairs. With the information provided, my best possible suggestion is to have a service company rep. who is a franchised dealer for the brand check it out.

Good Luck &
Happy Holidays

Use a meter and check continuity across the start, run and common terminals. No continuity=bad compressor.

Use a meter and check continuity across the start, run and common terminals. No continuity=bad compressor. It sounds like you may have a short. Check anticipator on thermostat also.
