Question

What does a cold air return do? It feels as if they blow out cold air when the heat is on? Can I cover one up safely?

Hi Melissa:

Cold air returns refers to the intake air vents. This is where the room air enters to be heated by the furnace.

Ususally there is a filter installed in this location. Cool air returns are most often located somewheres in the center of the house and are much larger then registers.

The cool air returns may be located just below the furnace if it's the forced hot air type furnace and it's located in a closet, in the hallway.

May also be in the hallway ceiling, if the heating unit is located in the attic. You may even have two returns if it's a large house or a two story with seperate heaters for each level.

The registers blow out the warm air and are located in the rooms. These are much smaller then the cool air returns and have small levers which slide up and down to adjust the vents. Moving those levers controls the volumn of warm air allowed to enter each room.

Closing one or two won't hurt any. However, I would not recommend fully closing one in an unused room. A totally cold unused room will become musty from the moisture of the cold air.

Good Luck,
