Question

I am exploring central A/C for an older house. One contractor suggests a "package unit" manufactured by Carrier Corp. This unit includes both the compressor and fan in one unit which is generally mounted on the roof. Do you have any info or experience with these package units?

Hi:Steven

You mentioned ONE contractor. I suggest getting the professional suggestions and opinions of several contractors.

The more contractors you contact, the more knowledge you'll have and choices you'll have prior to making your final decision.

As for a roof mount <Dual Pack> combination unit, my suggestion <personal opinion> is avoid them <Roof Mounts> if you have attic space to install a furnace and yard space for the A/C unit.

Roof mounts are good units but have to endure severe outside weather conditions and are difficult to access for maintenance.

During the rainy seasons, most heating contractors and no utility companies I know of will climb a ladder or go on a roof.

<Things to consider prior to a major purchase like this.>

Good Luck,
Tom
