Heat Sticks "on"
#1

Every one and a while my heater stays on in the heating position. It is a heat pump system. When it gets stuck, the light on my thermostat come on for "aux heat". I have to then turn off the heat at the thermostat to turn it off. I posted on another site and they mentioned a "sequencer". Any suggestions on what I can check myself?

is the heat staying on and not turning off? both the out side unit and the fan....pull the cover off the thermostat and check for any sticking or binding.... the cover might be pushed on too far...from being bumped into...is this an old system or new?...is it in a corner? is there a cold draft on it?unless there is a shorted wire, i cannt see how the second stage heat would be coming on....is it a digital thermostat or mercury type?

The heat sticks on and I have to manually go and move the switch to off. It is a manual thermostat for a heat pump, not digital. I think the thermostat is a Honeywell, I don't know how old it is. I assume the outside unit and inside heater/fan both stay on. The unit runs normally and just appears to stay on. The odd thing is that the "aux" heat light is on, when the head sticks on. I know the aux heat will come on when the temperature changes by a certain amount. But the house is not drafty and I don't see how/why the aux heat would come on. I wondered if it could be a problem with the thermostat? Thanks!
