air conditioner fan noise

my central air fan is making a squeeling
sound after it runs a while......
sometimes it gets real loud and i turn it off
what is this and will it hurt the unit to be
on? how can i fix it

The noise could be either the fan motors bearings or the squirrel cage bearings. Best to have it checked out before it developes into a more serious problem.
If you referring to the outside unit, I suggest you not use the unit until it is checked out also. A reduced fan speed at this unit could cause really expensive problems if left uncorrected for too long.
