How to Safely block a heater vent

This may be a dumb question, but since I am a renter in an apt complex I want to be as cautious as possible.

We have a central gas heater, I want to block off the vents to the bathrooms as they get way to hot. Closing the vents is not enough. What type of ojects can I stick inside there without risking fire? I found a 3 inch thick ashtray made of glass that fits perfectly to block it all off, then i stuck in a coffee cup to brace it.

Is this safe? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just don't want to be the one to burn the whole complex down.

Thanks in advance.

John

close heat outlet

Is there no damper down the pipe some where that you can shut the run off. You could take a big hand full of fiberglass insulation no paper and put it in there. ED
