Furnace Smell
I have a 30 year old Rheem forced hot air furnace; when it first turns on, I can detect an exhaust type smell coming from the heat ducts. the smell is short lived, and as soon as the blower kicks in, it disappears. The furnace is serviced and cleaned every year. What's going on? George

FURNACE
When it was serviced this year .Did they say anything about the heat exchanger could have a crack in it ? You could to feel safe get a carbon monoxide alarm. Or do you have a AC coil on the furnace and the water trap is dry? ED

The smell is from when the first come on all the time, or just first time of the heating season?
If it's all the time, i'd have it check for crack on the heat exchanger.
If it's just first heating season start up, then that's normal. The older exchanger were heavy metal, and it's burning off the dust, and what not from over the summer months.
