Question

The outdoor compressor and fan run constantly regardless of thermostat position. When the indoor unit is not engaged, the outdoor compressor and fan continue to run - freezing the lines leading to the indoor unit. Suggestions?

My best guess is the system is low on refrigerant. If the system has been in use for awhile, it is unlikely to be overcharged. The other scenario is a restriction in the system.

Hi Desparate:

In the control box of the outdoor unit is a big relay called the compressor contactor whose job is to operate the compressor. Most likely what's happened is the contacts have welded closed and won't allow the contactor to disengage power when it's supposed to. Don't continue to run the unit like this or you'll wipe out the compressor. [$$$] If you feel handy enough, check it out, or call your servicer. Thanks, John.
