After the pilot has been lit, and the wall thermostat turned on, the heater turns on for a few seconds and then shuts off, including the pilot light. My wall thermostat is only a year old, the box on the heater is about 3-4 years old. All of my connections are tight. Could the problem be a defective thermocouple? If not this, then what?

Definitely sounds like your thermocoupler needs replacing. Simple to do with the help of Readers Digest's book on home repair. The part is cheap at Lowes.

Hi D:

You have a standing pilot that you manually lite? Is this correct? When the burner goes off, does the 24 volts to the gas valve terminals stay steady or is it interrupted? If it's interrupted, you may have a bad limit switch. Try the thermocouple first since it's cheap, but don't be surprised if it doesn't solve the problem. Thanks. John.
