register from soffit

I just finished putting a soffit around some ductwork in my basement. Now I'd like to figure out how and where to put a register coming from the duct through the soffit, before I sheetrock the soffit.

My first question is: Should I put the register on the bottom of the ductwork/soffit or on the side of the duct? I was thinking the bottom so that the heat will be directed down.

My second question is: How do I go about making up for the inch or two between the duct and the end of the soffit. Is there some kind of flange I can use?? (one side would be attached to the ductwork and the other end to the register). Someone told me to just cut a hole in the ductwork and bend over the ends to attach the register. But somehow I think there must be a better way. I know they make special units specifically made to come out of the duct to the sheetrock for the registers, but I think I need something smaller (maybe a custom piece?).

Any suggestions?

Lightbulb registers

You dont say how the room is to the duct work. Like do you have to blow out the side to cover it or not. Or what size you have.

You could get a shop to make up a French collar and go that way. But for what you have lets do this. Mark the register hole on the duct where you want it. Now cut the hole out 1" in from that mark. Cut in the 4 corners. Bend this 1" out on all 4 sides 90o.Now how far is it from the duct to the outside of the drywall and add a 1/2"to it. Bend this strip of metal up into a box that the register size is. Lap at a corner about 1" and put a screw in there. Now with some screws put this on that 1" standing from the duct. You want to cut in all 4 corners of the duct that sticks out where the drywall will be so you can bend the side of it so it is in back of the drywall. After the drywall is up that 1/2" that will stick out at the top and bottom of the register box you bend over on the outside of the drywall----- and put the register up drill a hole in the side for the register screws to go into and they will go into that metal thats behind the drywall. Man had your email add could have drawed it out faster ED
