replace furnace gas valve

There is a slight smell of gas by the gas valve on the furnace. I have a new valve but unsure what needs to be done besides turn the gas off, unscrew the old valve and put on the new. Obviously I want to do it right and don't want to miss any steps.

the new valve should come with instructions read and follow them . also depending on the way the valve was shipped you may have to adjust the gas pressure on it to get the proper preasure.best advice if you don't know read the directions if you have them . also remember DONOT USE TEFLON TAPE only pipe dope

Did you use pipe dope or yellow tufflone tape?

And also did you check for leaks? DO NOT USE A MATCH!

Use soap water mixture to check for leaks.. if you find the leak, tighten the pipe.. If no dope been used. undo it, and put some on.

Lightbulb Leak detection

That kids bubble stuff works real good to find gas leaks holds better than soap water. You dont say LP or Nat gas. If LP and it has a regulater in the valve it should come with a block out for it or a way to turn it off. ED
