Gas Furnace Ignitor Noise

I have a 14 year old Carrier gas forced air furnace that has been making a loud "kaboom" sound occasionally. The first time I noticed a burning smell but not the second time. I checked the electronic pilot that seems to be lighting normally. I've checked for plugs in the gas flow and found none. It is currently off until I can figure out this thunderous boom. Any help would be appreciated.

DO NOT MESS WITH.

CALL A PRO IN NOW!

This kaboom is a delay ingtion in your heat exchanger.

This is nothing to mess around with.

Like Jay has stated, the kaboom is a delay in the main burner ignition. It could be caused by many things, but if it gets bad enough it can damage the heat exchanger or worse. The sequence of ignition is for the pilot to light each other burner. There is usually a carryover orifice that allows the flame to jump from burner to burner. If that gets clogged or obscured in any way, the gas will flow but not ignite immediately.

A good cleaning usually returns the furnace/boiler to normal operation.

Most of the time this is from rust and dirt on the burners and in and on the pilot lighther strip. I have found spider webs up in the venturi. You could turn off power to it and vacuum the burner top and bottom real good and try it Like the rest said if this dont do it call a tech to look at it ED ED
