problem with geothermal heating system

Hello,
we have a 13 year old geothermal heating/cooling system ("water furnace FC20") with vertical ground pipes in our newly purchased home. the heating worked fine last winter, so did the cooling in the summer.

now that we try to turn the heating back on it will only rund for about three minutes - and then the emergency heat comes on. that usually means that the heat is merely generated by the electric support heating unit, not by the geothermal system at all.

as this whole geothermal water furnace is like a big black box to us we wonder if anyone out there has had similar problems and/or knows what could be wrong and how it could be fixed...maybe/hopefully it is not a major problem.

thanks

Lots of ifs. Id start with the water pumps are they on and do they run ?did the compressor run at all? will it run on AC at all? You have to find out what part dont work.If you have power to all. if it is still a black box to you .I think you would call a tech and be there when he is and go over it with him or her.

Smile problem solved

we finally called in a pro and found out that the furnace was lacking free-on. apparently, when the pumps shut off really quickly after you turn the furnace on, it is always a lack of free-on.
it was refilled and no major leaks could be found. so we're hoping it will last a while.

13 years old I would try and find out how often they have had to put freon on the set up here. Didnt they look for any leaks? They should have .
