Doing preventative maintenance on an oil heater

I just got marrried and moved in with my wife and her oil heater. She's got a service plan that's $240 a year and covers an annual cleaning and 24hr repair service. We don't have a lot of money and I'm thinking about dropping this insurance and doing the annual cleaning myself. I'm an engineer and generally handy, but I have no experience with oil heaters. I think this one is 10-20 years old. Is it reasonable to think that I could learn how to do the annual cleaning and maintenance myself? If so, how do I learn?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Thumbs up

It helps to have all the kits to check them out. But you can do it ok just read up on it.

Go http://www.freepoolneat.com/oil.html

also go to a www for becket oil burners. All burner's are about the same it just how do you get in to them. Dont set the air to highor clean on a burner you want just now and then a whips of soot like.
