Loud Furnace

I have a gas forced air furnace. It has one intake vent in the first floor hallway, which is in the center of the house. Here is my question; when the blower turns on, its pretty loud. Not a grumbling or bad type of noise, it seems like its an air flow type noise. Is there any way to quiet it down? Thanks

How big is this return? The return vent itself or the duct work maybe too small for your sytem?

This return in the ceiling or on the floor?

If its just the air noise . lots of time we take and line the inside of the blower part with scrap fiberglass duct board works real good. also put your hand on the grill if the noise stops the grill resonates so you have to bend the bars just a little and it can stop.

Thanks for the replies. The return vent is 14 x 20. The vent is also a straight shot to the blower (14" from the wall to the furnace) Any tips on eliminating the noise? Thanks

That vent sounds pretty small..So, with that small of a return vent, you will get the loud air rush sound. How many BTU is the furnace?

The vent grill is 22 x 18. But the duct going to the furnace is only the 14 x 20. So the grill is covering a lot of wall. Should I somehow enlarge the return duct to accomadate the full size of the grill?

The manual says it is a 75k BTU input/60k BTU output.

No that is good for the 75 K btu and also good for 3 tons of AC. You say just 14" away try and see if you can line the blower compartment With ductboard insulation it will sure help you here.
