1977 Payne furance developed rumble on start up.Sounds like noise coming from heat exchanger compartment. It goes out once unit reaches temp. and the blower comes on. whats causing this?

Could be many things going on in there from a bad belt to a bent wheel. At almost 30 years old have you considered replacement. A new high efficient furnace would more than likely pay for itself in savings in a matter of 5 years or so.

Have you physically watch the furnace start up to see wherethe noise is originating from?
