New Water heater, old chimney

I want to replace my electric water heater with a gas one. I have an old oil burner chimney flue available. Is it possibly, if its cleaned, that I could vent it out the old chimney, maybe run small double walled pipe up it?

I would have the chimney inspected to make sure that it doesn't have any leaks in it. Using a draft gauge is probably the best way to test it; make sure there is a cleanout to clear out the chimney from broken bricks, mortar, suet.

Your idea of a flue liner is probably the most economical way to go to in providing adequate draw for the gas appliance.

Wink

If it is bad you could run the Gas B vent pipe up in it if you have room there.

Just a thought but have you checked to see what the residential building code is for gas hot water heaters?
