Thermostat wiring

How many wires, what colors, & what terminals are there on the thermostat? Gas, forced hot air heat? A/C?

There are probably going to be 5 or 6 possible connections, and that would be to a furnace that has heat + fan on + a/c options. If you just have heat, all you have to do is hook up the red and white wire. I would think there would be instructions with the programable to tell you which color codes go where. Do you have the thermostat in your possession yet, or are you scared to buy one first because you aren't sure how you'd hook it up? Like I said, it is so common place now, for people to be installing these themselves, and you can buy these at home centers, that the color codes should be there with the instructions, I believe.
