draft inducer on shared flue

Currently I have an older furnace that doesn't have a draft inducer and the gas water heater next to it joins to the same main flue pipe to the roof. Sort of a 'Y' connection. My new furnace will undoubtedly have a draft inducer, and I don't know anything about them. Couldn't it just start blowing up and then down to the water heater's flue inlet and come out into the room? Do you need some sort of oneway valve? I don't see any neighbors with separate flues. help

There are specific rules for venting forced draft appliances into a chimney. Your installer should be aware of these & vent the new furnace properly.
