furnace in attic

We have a house built in '54 and the furnace needs to be replaced. We don't have a garage or basement and the old furnace is in a bedroom closet. Does it need to be moved to the attic or is it part of a grandfather clause since it's an old house. If yes, does a heat pump also need to be placed in an attic or would this be an alternative to moving the furnace to the attic?

Furnace in bedroom

By the nature of your question, I have to presume a contractor has told you the furnace has to be moved. Call or visit your local code official to get the low down on local codes.

The furnace/air handler can be in the closet in the living area. but depends on code in your area. Check with city hall and see what the code is.
