sulfur smell

What could be the cause of a sulfur smell in our basement? We've been having intermittent problems with our boiler over the past 3 months. The contact points had to be adjusted and the ignitor had to be replaced. Up until a week and a half ago, the boiler made this rumbling sound when starting up. And now we have this smell. Could this be related to the boiler or something else? Thanks for your help. Lillian

Smell

It very well could be the boiler. I suggest you get a pro in to look at it ASAP. You should be getting NO odor from the boiler and any odor is an indication that something is wrong. Have the service person run a complete combustion analysis.

oil furnaces kicks reset

:wall: Iv been working on two furnaces and both are doing the same thing. Iv replaced the nozzels, filters checked both tanks for water. checked for air in fule line, and Im lost. Both will start and run fine for a day or two then kick the reset out. One furnace is 7 years old and the other one is 6 mounths old. Both started doing this about the same time after they got fuel delivered. One is the new style becket controles and the other is the old style. Both have good oil pressur at the pump, the older furnace has a two line system and the new one has a one line system. Iv taken fule from the bleeders at the pumps and no water or durt was found. The intake line is 3 to 4 in off the bottem of the tanks. Both burners are burning clean and I cant find a problem. They will run from 12 to 48 houres then kick the reset. Please Help, RichRead More

Old Wall Heater Question

My house is 1953. I have an old "Commonwealth Force-Flo" natural gas heater, mounted in the wall. Model K-50 DWH, or, K-57 DWH. It's almost 6 feet tall. There's a motor in the bottom of it that forces out the heated air. The motor hasn't worked since I moved in two years ago. I just took off the juction box cover on the motor and saw that a wire splice had come undone, so I hooked it back together. The motor now works, [B]but it doesn't shut off[/B]. The wiring in the junction box is as follows: hot wire from source (main breaker box) comes into box and is spliced to a wire that runs up somewhere into the upper portion of the heater. A wire from up in the heater then returns down into the junction box and is spliced to a wire that goes to the motor. The return wire from the motor comes back into the junction box and splices with the neutral wire that returns to the source (main breaker panel). I'm wondering, is there some kind of thermostat(or something) up in the heater, that opens and closes, depending on the heat of the air, thus completing the electrical circuit when it wants the motor to run, forcing air out into the rooms of the house? If so, [B]is my motor continuously running [/B]because, perhaps, the thermostat inside the heater is damaged, and will not break the circuit, letting the motor shut off until it is needed again? I may be way off base, but I'm worried about the motor running ALL the time. That doesn't seem right. I need to do something to remedy that situation. Thanks in advance!! :)Read More
