Gas furnace start up LOUD and scary

We have a gas furnace (I think it's a Carrier)....
The last few times it starts up- I hear a loud bang in basement so i went down to watch it start up. The pilot is lit fine and when it goes to fire up there is like a FOOM and some flames shoot out the front of the unit- then it works fine..... We are calling for service today- Does this mean the unit needs new burners?

Sounds like delayed ignition. Probably due to dirty burner/crossovers. The servive guy should be able to take the burners out and clean them and you'll more than likely be fine. While he's there though get the whole thing cleaned and safety inspected.

Don't use the furnace untill this is taken care of.
