Is it better for a furnace to run continually..
Is it better for my furnace to run continually or turn on and off every 40 minutes to maintain the set temp. I have a 95 percent efficeint furnace 90,000 btu. My furnace comes on for 10 minutes to get the thermostate up then shuts off, 45 minutes later after it turns back on the raise the temp. again, it seems like this would be hard on the furnace and inefficeint?? I know i need more insulation in the attic, and soon as the funds are available I will be doing that but until then I was just curious. Thanks

Your furnace won't run continuously, just the blower. This will keep air circulating through the house, but the furnace itself will only turn on when there is a call for heat. Once it satisfies the thermostat, the burners will shut down. The blower may draw a higher amperage when starting, but it's only for a few seconds. Then it pulls the running amperage for as long as it is on. Comfort of a slightly more uniform temperature vs higher electric cost. It's your call.

You must be down south if your furnace is only running the short of time.
As gold said, if you run the fan, it's your call. I do run mine all the time and it evens out the temp in the home.

Thanks for the help, I am actually in michigan where it is freezing cold this month in the teens. I'll turn the blower on and run that then, in order to maintain a nice even temp.

Running the blower is in theory going to give you a more even temp. through the house but several factors come into play such as the location of the supply registers, and blower speed. If the registers are blowing on you it will feel drafty and if the air is comming out too fast not only will it be noisy but again it will feel drafty, try it and see how you feel.

Our has been running at night just to keep the house at 55. Thank goodness for the wood stove which we burn by day. Forecast is for single digits tonight (wind chills close to -20... brrrrrr!!!)
