Black soot -like substance on furnace filter

I examined my gas furnace filter today and found a black ash/soot -like substance on it. The furnace has been working normally otherwise. Usually a dirty filter seems to have a brown dust like color. Any idea what might cause this? It does not have any smell to it. thanks
