Given, a new high efficiency multi stage, multi speed gas forced air heater, and programmable thermostat. "Smart" thermostats sense when you want the heat to be at the desired temp, then start ramping up the heat slowly so that it is at the temp at the set time. In the case of the Honeywell stat I have, it starts heating(low heat at low speeds) at about 4AM to get the heat up by 6AM. Standard programmable stats simply turn up the heat(full bore) at the desired time setting. Which uses less energy, assuming a 7 degree setback???? There is no overide of the 'smart' technology, and they are "energy star" rated, so I have to assume they are better??????????

Gas usage will be about the same with both stat. I have the Honeywell VisionPro, and been very please with it.
The low stage recovery is better, since it can warm things up better and will feel more comfortable... Not a sudden blast of heat, and rise of temp where, the furnature will still be cold.
I don't know where you are from. but you can be your own judge on what you want for set back.
I set mine back to 60 in sleep/away, and 68 when we are home.
