Unhappy Fires up, dies right away - repeat..

Starting this afternoon our furnace fires up like usual but 5 seconds later turns right off.. a minute or less goes by and it does the same thing over and over again.. I was worried that this may wear something out so I turned off the gas valve, and turned the furnace off from the fuse box.

This is our first home with a furnace of our own to look after so I know squat about them but am the type to DIY.. just need some guidance.. I'll really appreciate it.

It's starting to get cold in here.

Your "flame proving" system is not detecting the main flame. Depending on what kind of flame proving system you have it could be as simple as polishing a "flame rod" with a scotchbrite pad.

What is the make and model of your furnace?

Garret,

The same thing happened to us when we purchased our first home. It took one (expensive) visit from the repairman to tell us the flame rod (the little metal stick) had to be cleaned.
Try that before you call someone...

Thanks Paola, I got in there with my vacuum and sucked up all the dust and some sandy crud and turned everything back on.. it's been working fine now.

Thanks again guys,
