Noisey Blower Motor

I have a York Diamond 80 that is 3 years old. When the heat or air kicks on there is a loud rattle that occurs until the motor stops running. It sounds like the squirrel cage is rattling. I took the blower assembly out and checked the cage. It looks good although some of the fins seem to be looser than others. I then wrapped the cage with electrical tape (to elimate possible fin rattle) and ran the motor again (blower assembly sitting on the floor) . I still can hear the rattle. Can faulty motor bearings cause the motor and squirrel cage to vibrate and create a rattle?

No fins should be loose, of course. Your blower squirrel cage must now be out of balance.

Absolutely, if some fins are lose then it is very likely that the squirel cage is out of balance and the furnace's sheet metal is likely to rattle... heck I can often hear a bit of ratteling just when the motor shuts off.

cheers

Is it common for the squirrel cage to come out of balance? This furnace was working fine until about 3 weeks ago.
