Question

What is the rule of thumb for determining how much R22 refrigerent is needed to fill a new 15' line set? That is the pair of copper lines between the condenser and the evaporvator. Is it so many pounds per foot of line set or what? Since the new condensor will be precharged, I will need to calculate the amount of additional refrigerent to add to the line set.

While there is a formula for estimating the amount needed based on line diameters and distances, in practice, you add enough freon on top of the condensing unit packing charge to the system to get the desired operating pressures and temps. It's easier to just weigh the freon can.

If you read the Litature that comes with the new unit you will see a part in there that states how much would be needed for the size of Liquid line you have.... Most units are good for either 15' to 25' of line set.. here again read your instructions....
